The Misconception of Artists
It is really kind of sad that there is such a misconception of artistry. Michelangelo was brilliant, no doubt about it. Picasso, Kahlo, and so many more are some of the most talented creatures the Universe has ever developed. This is not a debate of how great all artists are, but more about the fact that art should be available to anyone who wants it.
No one owns artistry. The most common misconception about art is that the artist must be the best artist of all time to qualify as being an artist. As an artist, I find this incredibly offensive. However, interestingly enough, I deal with insecurity. Art does not belong to anyone but I am hypercritical of my place in the world of artists. This is an absurd notion due to my beliefs that all beings create art, no matter what realm they deal.
We need to move away from the notion that art is some majestical, obscure thing that only the most talented of creatures can conjure. The truth of the matter is that we all create art every single day without ever even thinking about it. Most people find the common pigeon as average as they come, some fat, some darker than others but plain nonetheless. Yet, I hear their coos as a work of art. All creatures sing and we are no different.
We need to step outside of our insecurities and find our own realm of artistry. For some of us it is pottery, painting, music, writing, but there is a hidden art in the world. No one recognizes the art of technology, culinary arts, or many others. The language of coding is absolutely an art that is not recognized as such, which I find a travesty.
Art is not some monopoly owned by the one percent. Art is owned by each, and every single being in the universe and I would even extend that invitation to inanimate beings like stones. Art is whatever YOU feel it to be. If you are an architect, then buildings will be the work of art. If you are a sanitation engineer or a teacher, there is room for artistry.
The key is to remember that no matter what you are doing, it is an art. People in the upper middle class pay to have their places cleaned by professionals who specialize in cleaning. That - in itself - is an art. The bi-monthly haircut is considered an art. Personally, I think anything you pay to have done for you is an art. If you have a gardener, the you are paying for the art of garden arrangement. The same goes for more technical jobs. Paying a mechanic to fix an automobile is an art. If you pay someone to do your taxes, then you are paying for the art of numbers.
When they say you can be whatever you desire, it is almost true. The misconception is that if you try as hard as you can, you will achieve all you set out. The truth is that it is necessary to align with your purpose to fulfill your role as an artist, since we are all artists in our own realm. It is time to grasp our inner artists.
